Sole accountability for all content on this award-winning website; developed story ideas, evaluated pitches, interviewed sources and wrote stories. Assigned freelance articles and served as liaison for columnists and bloggers; edited submissions to ensure consistency and posted articles on the website. Gained experience with content management systems. Attended conferences to network and cover speakers.

  • Increased number of original columns from 15 to 40 per month through writing more articles personally and adding columnists. Asked women who pitched their stories to write first-person articles, which became standard procedure. Mentored writers, providing support and encouragement.

Copy Editor/Makeup Editor – The Orange County Register, Santa Ana, CA (1992–1998)
Edited copy, composed headlines and captions. As makeup editor, tracked a myriad of page elements, made floor edits and final corrections before pages went to camera. Developed good relationships with color lab, graphics, imaging and composing room staff; independently did final proofreading that yielded additional errors even though material had been edited twice.

Freelance Editor, Writer (1991–1992)
Completed a variety of freelance assignments. Reviewed, edited and ensured compliance with a government request for proposal for Blue Cross of California (more than 1,500 pages, estimated contract value of $3.5 billion). Co-authored Injury and Illness Prevention Program (SB 198) compliance manual prepared by Disaster and Emergency Management Institute. Copy edited the final issue of Security News, Security Pacific National Bank.

Managing Editor – Foothill Inter-City Newspapers, Duarte, CA (1989–1991)
Supervised eight-member editorial staff and several correspondents to produce a set of four newspapers published twice each week. Assigned and edited stories, offered direction and suggestions, determined story selection and placement and completed page layout using a pagination system. Wrote weekly editorial. Interacted with local civic and business leaders. Worked collaboratively with reporters who had a longstanding history with the newspaper and better understood the audience we served.

Edited stories, wrote headlines, designed layouts on pagination system and reviewed and selected wire-service stories.

Editor – Pool and Spa News, Los Angeles, CA (1986–1987)
Supervised in-house staff of eight, plus eight correspondents nationwide to produce the pool and spa industry’s leading, semi-monthly national trade magazine. Scheduled and coordinated all aspects of publication production, wrote regular column and occasional news and features. Covered national trade association board meetings and interacted with industry leaders. Initiated major redesign of magazine.
